Hey, Phil, Road Warrior was on television the other day. Now, I know you're not Australian, but you're closer to it than anybody else I know. Anyway, my wonderful wife and I had a difference of opinion about the proper pronunciation of the brand name "Dinki - Di Dog Food " that Max was scarfin' up on the hill watching the camp. So, is it "Dinki - Dye" , or "Dinki-Dee"? Your opinion would be appreciated.

Re: Kiwi Phil - I need an opinion

I use the name Kiwi Phil because I am an ex-Kiwi...have lived in Aussie for 20yrs and took up citizenship 15yrs back.

The term Dinky-Dye is an Aussie term....pretty much rural tho.....

It would be used around here like..."he's a Dinky-Dye Okker"...meaning "he is a real good Aussie bloke", and when he meets you both he is likely to say to you, "Gidday Hoss, and is this your old sheila is it?"

(that should short'n up the disagreement you are currently having).

So as I understand it here in rural Queensland, it is a term for a country Aussie, who has to be 'good' (can't be a bad bxggar).

Not sure what you are talking about with the Road Warrior. Is Max out of Mad Max? I could imagine Mal sharing a tin of dog food with his blue heeler, or was it a cattle dog.....

Cheers

Phil, a heeler is a cattle dog (or sheep), it bites the heels of the animal to get it motivated to move.

'Dinky Di' is australian slang, it means ' the real deal' or 'authentic' or 'genuine'.
There was never a genuine dog food called 'dinky di', it was made up just for the movie.
I have no idea as to it's origins.

I would guess your discussions on Dye or Dee would have something to do with the pronunciation of your vowels...a..e..i..o..u..

I believe the Aussies have a higher pitch, the Kiwis are flatter, and the Africanders and really flat.

To a Kiwi, an Aussie saying the word 'sick' sound like 'seek'.
To a Aussie, a Kiwi saying the word 'fish' sounds like 'fush'.

The few American women I have spoken with seem to have a high almost squeaky pronunciation, so maybe your wife is just pronouncing her vowels differently.

(you'r still right tho Hoss!!)

Cheers
Phillip
