K&N air filters are not the typical "dry element" you see on stock vehicles. They are comprised of pleated, multi-layered, oil impregnated surgical cotton fabric which traps 98% of dirt down to 5.5 microns in size. In comparison, a human hair is about 50 microns in diameter. They are washable and re-oilable and are the last air filter you should have to buy for the engine life of any vehicle. K&N equips about 80% of all off-road racing vehicles and wins in every major off-road event in the world, including Pikes Peak, the Baja 500 & 1000 and the grueling Paris to Dakar race. K&N also dominates the world's most prestigious and technical racing association with nine of twelve Formula One Teams using K&N air filters.
I've got one on my work truck and finally cleaned and reoiled it, according to instruction.
I use mine in extremely dirty and dusty conditions and after about 50K miles, no probs.

I hear that Topmason - and I agree they should do great, but as always, caveats -

all those races events etc are short term, 1000 miles tops and the motors get rebuilt

military use - so many hours and they change em out, its only TAXPAYER money, but the boys in battle deserve every advantage

Ill see how it does, Im not a leadfoot too often, I mostly just go fast in the impaler when Im bored or depressed cause the sound of that four barrel carb and the classic chevy V8 roar never fails to bring a smile to my face

course the weekly 30 dollar hit in the wallet aint fun, but its all relative

K&N are not what they are cut out to be. My father believes in them, I don't. Circle Track magizine did a study on them a year or so ago stating this. The ones that completely replace the box and have the open element in the engine bay cost even more power. They take in hot air, not cool outside power producing air.

The ones that replace a stock element do not have the hot air issue. They are not as effective as a good quailty (READ Bowes, Wix, anything that is used on tractors, big rigs, construction eqiupment) but they are better than no filter at all. Something else- Don't do the glasspack. A turbo style muffler will actually produce more power.
