Hi guys,

Last weekend, I backed onto a rock. Thought I had damaged the prop, but it turns out it was the skeg that took the hit.

A triangular piece about 1" x 1" x 1" is missing from the rear bottom corner of the skeg of the Alpha One drive.

Can't notice any difference in the handling.

Do you think this matters, and should I bother to have a piece welded back on?

Thanks.

If its only a 1"x1"x1" section, you probably didn't damage anything inside the gearcase. You can check the lower unit gear oil for signs of water intrusion (milky oil after running the boat). Maybe think about installing a skeg protection. Here's one manufacturer:

http://www.skeggardmarine.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=SS

Also, some prop shops will weld a new piece of aluminum back on, shape it and paint it so it looks good as new.

I did the same thing Sunday. Bashed my SS prop too. Boat ran fine with the spare prop. Bought the guard yesterday, and put it on. Prop will be gone for 10 days, $130.00 . All 4 blades got nicked up, 2 particularly hard.

If you dont add the skeg protection, remember you have a shorter skeg to protect the prop, after all that what it is basically there for and if it is gone it cant do its job.

And by the way azfyr, I presonally prefer the submurged stumps and logs, for get the rocks.

Thanks, guys.

Just ordered a Skeg Guard - looks like a great product. Amazing that there are specialized little companies for just about anything!
