Knocking noise from volvo penta 4.3 GXI

I knocking noise is occurring from our engine/stern drive when our stern drive is put on more than half lock (in either direction). This happens when in gear or neutral and in any tilt position. When the stern drive is straight the knocking noise silences and the engine/stern drive sounds fine.

We have also noticed a small oil slick around the boat when it has been left in its wet berth for some time.

Any ideas?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Sounds like the u-joints are Shot, 'n ya got a leak,...

Have ya checked/ changed the drive oil,..?? any water in it,..??
How 'bout the trim oil,..??

Pull the drive, change the u-joints, 'n pressure test the drive,...
