Kohler 5ECD Generator Remote Shut-down Fault

My boat is fitted with Kohler 5KW generator. It's starts and runs perfectly with the remote start switch. Last weekend the generator would not shut-down when I pressed the start/stop button again. I then shut the generator down with the manual switch on the actual generator and then set it back to "auto" and it can them be started again via remote start but not shut-down.

I did disconnect it from the battery to see if it would reset. That made no differance.

The Kohler manual is not very helpful and I would appreciate and advise on troubleshooting the problem.
