A lanyard safety switch is a kill switch but instead of have a toggle it's got a pin that connects to your wrist or lifejacket, if you fall overboard the pin pulls out and kill the ignition.

With the pin inserted test the terminals on the back of the switch for continuity (ohm test). If you get zero ohms - all is good, if you get a reading other than zero - switch is faulty.

Aldo

on the L drive if you get 0 ohms its in the kill position. the ign system grounds to kill. if you get infinity its in the run position. to remove all ign kill from the engine remove the blk/yellow wires from the terminal strip on the motor. retest for spark. I dont think the neon tester is worth using.
you really need to quit bouncing about. your posts are looking like a kangaroo.
you will either have to take the motor to a tech or buy the manual and read the section on how and why the ign system works. someplace on the control box ,originally, or on the dash beside the switch, a bayliner favorite, was an emergency stop lanyard. the bayliner panel mounted one was a little rubber cap that pushed the switch button down. if its removed or the cap dry rotted it will trigger the ign kill circuits. for testing locate the emergency stop switch and dissconnect one wire and retest for spark. and quit bouncing :) . you never, that I could find, tell how many cylinders this thing has the 85,90 Hp are slightly different from the 120,125 models.

Yesterday, about several posts ago and 2 or 3 catagorys ago, I gave you some simple tests to ck your problems with, got no responce, just more jumping around posts, if you can't stay in one place and do testing in a proper order and with out a manual, your peaing in the wind, just wasting time--Bob

Testing is done with an ohm meter. You know how to use it I hope. It is a switch. You testing for 0 and infinity opened and closed.

The purpose is so that when you get a freak wave, motion, etc.. and fall out of the boat it does not come back and run over you! It has happened a few to many times. You usually have a string or rope accatch to a clip that lets the switch close then when pulled it breaks the circuit and kills the motor. Then you can swim to the boat and climb back in.

By pass is easy just get the wires that go across the switch and tape them together temporarily!

Now as everyone says go buy a manual and do the testing procedures.

i just went and snipped the joining of the lanyard switch and it still doesnt turn, this leaves me to beleive its something to do with the flywheel stator, and i have also deceided this is one of the worst ideas for a boat engine so its on ebay now.
