I am in the middle of a project L-Drive and have noticed that the steering arm has been rubbing the surface of the mount that is below the arm. Looks like it has been doing it for a while as it has rubbed almost a 1/4 of an inch down into it. Does anyone know what could cause this? I am new to working on boats, but have worked on autos all of my life. Thanks!!

Re: L-Drive steering arm rubbing motor mount?

Here are some pics. As you can see, the yoke has dropped darn near 1/2 of an inch and the steering arm is rubbing into the top of the mount. My question is what holds everything up inside the mount and keeps the lower unit form falling through? What ever it is, its obviously damaged in my boat. From the service manual, it appears that there is a retaining ring that holds the steering bearing in place. Is that all there is in there to hold everything together? I'm just trying to get a better idea of what I'll be running into once I tear into it. As I am quickly learning, L-Drive parts are getting hard to come by, so I don't want to tear apart anymore than I have to. Thanks again!

Good Pics! Please post some more info as Year/Model and any service history from over the years. I have no experience in this matter but you would think something failed or some maintenance was needed. Good Luck! jow

Looks like a problem with either the bearing or maybe the snap ring that holds the bearing in place has popped out?
