L-Drive?

Please bear with me, I've got some more questions. And to all of you who were able to respond to my last questions, thank you. I thought I had this figured out. I think/thought that I owned a 1989(?) Force 125. It has a "two piece" drive shaft, with a newer plastic water pump. What gives with the model number and with the "L-Drive"? What is an L-Drive, and how do I identify whether I've got one? Is there a serial number that would tell me exactly what year and make I have? Thank you for you time and responses.

Michael

Re: L-Drive?

These engines were identified by the model number.
You should have a MODEL number that looks something like this.

1251A9B

or

C1258F9B

The first 3 numbers designate the horsepower.
The last number (9) indicates the year, as in 1989.

The model number was only placed on a small tag, on the motor mounting bracket. Usually on the side, just below the transom bracket.

An L-drive is not an outboard.
It uses the powerhead of a 2 stroke outboard. But it is mounted inside the boat and connects to a drive unit thru the transom, like an i/o.
If your motor looks like an outboard, it is not an L-drive.

Re: L-Drive?

Thanks for the info Roscoe. That's a big relief!! I had just heard some really bad things about this "L-Drive" and just wanted to make sure. Where would you recommend me getting some parts for this motor? (I'm gonna look up the exact model/year when I get home) I'm looking for the impeller, lower unit seals (particularly the shift shaft seal, as it seems to be the only one that's leaking), the thermostat seal(the one behind the thermostat), and a few other odds and ends. It seems that the boat shops around here are a little proud of their parts. Thanks again!
Michael
