L&S Torque Shift Prop setup question..

Hello, I own a #126 L&S Torque shift prop (had it for 3 years), that I was using to get more power from a v6 I/0. Well, I sold that boat and bought a 230hp 5.0 setup. Runs great with a 19p SS prop (50mph) @ 4700, but I am thinking of putting on my shift prop for lower rpm cruising (starts at 11p, then ends between 19p-26p selectable). We cruise the lake a lot, and I think it would conserve fuel to shift up to 21p or 22p. Any ideas on the cam and spring setup I should try? I have most cams available, but have the zz cams installed (for lower hp) from my v6 setup.

I think you are going the wrong way. When you back off WOT you usually have more drag caused by more hull in the water. This makes the engine work harder so you need to downshift to increase the engine rpm's under that load; like pulling a trailer with a car or truck and knocking the overdrive off while you do to reduce the load on the engine.

Most engines are more efficient when the load is reduced.

So, you want less pitch, not more.

Well, I believe you are right to a degree, but...

There are so many variables: engine size, load, HP to load ratio, prop efficiency and in what range, etc.

I am pretty sure that in most cases if you can get more speed at the same rpm, you are better off...

Just my 2 cents.

Bob

Bottom line is you would have to try it to be sure.
