So I was running my engine on muffs and with the prop spinning in forward hear I accidently attempted to shift it in reverse and heard a loud grind. Could I have cause any internal damage? I killed the engine and shifted it in reverse and forward and everything seemed smooth and fine engine is a 250 Yamaha hpdi

Probably just the clutch dogs grinding some....it's doubtful there's any damage....if you've got to shift gears out of the water, then let prop stop spinning before shifting...

Agree- also shift (always) quickly & firmly- OB's don't like to be "eased" into gear---

Although shifting from forward directly to reverse is bad, OB's can take it b/xc it happens all the time. Your one-time won't do anything. Don't make a habit.
People who use reverse as a brake often don't realize that even in neutral, when a boat's moving forward the prop is spinning.

And although you didn't ask, don't rev a motor on the muffs, or in neutral. And if you must get some RPM's it's safe to do it with the throttle and not by putting it in gear.
