I know I probably should, but, hypothetically, If I've only ran the outboard, 1982 Johnson 50 hp, for a total of 8 hours this year on fresh L/U oil at the beginning of the season. Do I really need to change it next year.

I know I should change it, and check for water. I just asking for op[inions.

Should change or drain it before the motor is in freezing temperatures in case of water intrusion. Trouble with just draining it is remembering to fill it again before you use the boat in spring.

If you know it doesn't leak water, then you should be just fine. Just remove the bottom plug and make sure you don't have a milk shake drool out.:D What I love is when you open the plugs up and only water gushes out.:D:D

I have a 25 and a 6 and both sat for 10 years with the same oil in them. Luckily, they were sealed good and the oil still looked like new. LOL Oh well......they both got new oil and water pumps before I put them away.

I imagine it would take thousands of hours of use to "wear out'' lower oil, I know i have the same rear end oil in my truck and it is over 100,000 miles.

The real reason you change the oil is to check for water intrusion, I suppose if you wanted you could just crack the plug and make sure that fresh oil comes out and leave it go.

If the motor has sat for any length of time the water will seperate down and be the first thing out when you crack the plug but that is the main problem is getting a bunch of water in there and it freezes doing alot of damage.
