lack of speed

i have a 1973 70hp evinrude. i cleaned the carbs this winter,because it would stall when i put it in foward. that fixed that problem,but now it will not reach a speed over 10mphs. could i of missed something cleaning the carbs or do you think i have another problem?

Possible your jets are clogged, or could be dropping a cylinder.

Check the spark and compression, post your findings.

I have the same problem. I found my top cylinder not fireing. put in new plugs, run them for a short period, checked them, See which one is not fireing. Then swaped coils and see if it follows. That is what a few people here has told me to try. Now it's at a repair shop, and when I told them of the various things i've tried at least they did tell me I saved them alot of time, thus saved myself money.
