My 1986 I/O boat doesn't have a lanyard safety kill switch and I am wondering whether to install one. Who out there has one on their boat? Do you use it?

It's particularly important in small boats being singlehanded. It's easy to fall out and there ain't no one to help....

They have to be avaiable at parts places. I wouldn't think the brand would matter. All you have to do is hook it in series with the ignition "on" wire from the starter switch - the one that has +12V whenever the ignition is on the ON (not start) position. Depnding on the complexity of your ignition circuitly, there may be more than one such wire. Find one that kills the engine when running if disconnected from the starter switch.

There is a wireless unit out there that's pretty affordable. Tournament guys are using them on their boats. Here is their website. www.wirelesslanyard.com

Good luck.

Cobra, I think the need for a safety lanyard depends on the type of boat. If it would be hard for you to fall out of the boat due to its slow speed, high sides, comfortable seating etc, it is likely unnecessary. If you have a high performance speed boat or center console with a standup driving position, it may be a good idea.

Wouldn't be without one and use it every time the big motor runs.

I wouldn't chance going without one. Nothin' like accidentally going in the drink and watching your boat motorin' on without you( or over you!! ).

The should go in "stupid human tricks" but I used to take the lanyard off the 5hp on my tender and hide it just as a simple security measure. Of course I spend the morning trying to figure out why the %^&*( engine wouldn't start.

Now I leave the lanyard on (and key in the big boat half the time). If someone's going to steal your boat they'll find a way.

I have a lanyard on my boat. I don't use it because I would forget I have it on, stand up and step to the side of the drivers seat and it would trip. People would fall out of their seats! Dangerous in my opinion. I guess I could just add a longer cord but I'll take my chances.
