Hi all,

will be lapping the replacement flywheel to the crank on my 30 rude the weekend weather permitting, the reason for this is the key had snapped and picked up a very small amount to the crank.

Now i have lapped valves on numerous motor cycle engines so know the basics, but the flywheel is a bit on the larger side, anyone done this if so any tips

Regards

Re: Lapping a new flywheel

Be very careful.

The key does not hold the flywheel in place. The key locates the flywheel and the interference fit between the crank taper and the flywheel taper is what holds it in place.

We have seen flywheels lapped to the point they fit all the way down and sat on the shoulder below the crank taper, no interference fit. Nothing would hold the flywheel in place after that.

Do not use Locktite either. Just be very careful.

Re: Lapping a new flywheel

Many thanks for the reply, I only have to remove a tiny amount of material that was left by the failure of the last woodruff key, fortunately the rest was deposited on the " old " flywheel, i shall post some pics prior to lapping the replacement and after.

I will be very carefull.

Many Thanks
