I have an older IBM Thinkpad T30 lap top that needs to have the system date and time entered every time its started for the last few days.

I'm thinking that the CMOS battery has died, and before ordering a new one, thought I would run this past the techie members on this forum.

So think its the CMOS battery or some other problem?

Thanks!

Mark.

The CMOS battery is what will hold the time. Or a corrupt cmos, but then you would have lot of other problems.

I haven't seem many laptops that have access to the battery. You can try pulling the covers off the bottom to see if you have access to it.. If not, then you're pulling the off the whole bottom.

I've had newer Thinkpads open. The entire top comes off, the keyboard lifts out and the cmos battery is usually right near the touch pad. Will have to take a close look at this older model and see if it comes apart as easy.

But I can tell you that the T41 and T61 models are a piece of cake to work on. I think the IBM/Lenovo line of PC's are the toughest laptops we have had at work. The Dell's and Gateway's literally fell apart. They just can't stand up to the high use demands that office machines get.

Yea, we are an all IBM/Lenovo/Cisco shop. I agree, they're built like tanks.

I was recently issued a new Lenovo T410 with the i7 cpu and 8gigs of ram. They threw in an extra 500GB drive that I can swap in and out where the CD/DVD goes and a docking station.
