I have a 12' aluminum duranautic, the transom specifically says maximum of 10 HP. I currently have a 9.5 Johnson on it but it doesn't push the way I want it to, it runs flawlessly so that is not an issue at all. What I'm wondering is, would it be extremely dumb to put a 15hp on it?

Re: larger outboard

I have almost the same set up with the exception of mine is 14' and has a 9.9 Yamaha 4-Stroke (wich is a pretty heavy motor). it works very well gets up on plave almost immediatly. have you checked your motor height? made a big difference on mine, I ended up having to add a bracket to raise mine another 2 inches, and it a short shaft motor. also, have you tried a different prop pitch?

I also have a 12-foot Duranautic and I've run a lot of motors on it over the years. A 9.5 should flat out boogie! Does yours have a lot of hours on it? How is compression?

One other thing that you might consider is lowering the pitch on the propeller. You can go as low as 6.5 pitch using a Michigan Wheel #012068.

Always been like this ??? or was it OK and got worse.
Set up of the motor and weight distribution in the boat are huge factors in a set up like yours.
I agree, if the motor is in good shape and the loading is good it should boogie !!!

Re: larger outboard

The anti cav plate is dead even with the keel. when i got the motor i dropped it off at the local marinas shop to have it gone over, after 2 days they said it was perfect other than changing 1 gasket. I think the weight is distributed pretty well, tank and battery up front along with the 2 anchors (i tried it all towards the back, wont do that again) i think I'm down to trying a lower pitch or just dealing with it. thank you everybody that gave advice, very much appreciated
