can motor be cranked and ran without hooking up to wiring harness??
motor cranks over with good compression but no spark.
we pulled flywheel, coils and points look like they were recently replaced or new.

Yes, it will start and run without being hooked up. You have the flywheel off, so you are looking at the problem. We can only guess.

Re: lark IV no spark model 35933 L

Start tracing black wires. Those go to the various kill circuits on that outboard. Look at the vacuum safety switch and the mercury switch. Make sure no wires are frayed or exposed. Trace the wires.

If the magneto is set up correctly with the points set correctly, the problem is probably in the wiring. There are several points at which the black wires connected to the points can short out and kill the ignition system. Look for the one that's causing it.

The other thing that can cause a lack of spark is a sheared flywheel key, which destroys the timing of the engine. I'm assuming that, with the flywheel off, you've checked that.

There is a troubleshooting guide in your service manual. Check it.

Finally, is this outboard in neutral when you're testing. If it's not, there will be no spark.

It's a 1962 40hp. Larks were 35 hp in the 50's, 40hp in the 60's and 50hp in the 70's.
My 1960 Lark has two mercury switches on the throttle that prevent it from firing if the throttle is set too fast. They're little silver cannisters about the size of a 22 caliber bullet. They're inside the engine compartment and they move when you twist the throttle.
I'm assuming you've never had this engine running. You might even check the spark plug wires. Sometimes they get pulled out of the coils. They just push in a sharp pin in the coil.

Thanks to all who replied.I reset the points to .20 and have good blue spark from both plugs!!!
Its hard to believe that there was no spark at all with incorrect settings of the point gaps.
All is good now, but there may be more to come. Off to the electric shift now!!!
