Hello:

I am in the process of restoring a 1969 Larson V174 Crestflite. I have most work completed and actually got it in the water last summer. Unfortunately, the middle of the lake is where I discovered a problem.

Sometime before I purchased the boat at auction, someone (probably kids) put a large quantity of dirt in the fuel tank which I have been unable to get out of the tank without removing it from the boat.

My question to any older Larson owner is:
Did Larson leave adequate clearance to remove the tank without cutting/lifting the top of the boat???

The tank measure 10" H x 16" D x 30" L. It appears that if I remove the plywood kickboard under the dash and trim a small amount of the plywood bracing that there will clearance to pull the tank out from under the bow.

If anyone has done this before and has a few tips or tricks, I would be grateful

Thanks much

Re: Larson V174 fuel tank removal

Hello:

Well, I managed to get the tank out of the boat by trimming the kickboard and slightly notching a foam support. The tank could then be turned 90 degrees and slid out under the steering column.

After removing the fuel gage sender and draining the funk out of the tank, I peered in for a look-see. UH-OH!!! The interior of the tank has a 1/8" layer of rust/crud adhered to the walls. To make things worse, there is an anti-slosh baffle dividing the tank. No way will I be able to get the tank clean enough for my peace of mind.

Can anyone out there recommend an aftermarket steel or plastic fuel tank, based on experience??? I realize an exact steel reproduction is probabloy not available. The tank I removed is 16 gallons, 30"L x 10"H x W.

Thanks for any help.
