Folks,
I've done some searches and not finding the details I'm trying to find, so thought I'd post some details here and perhaps you can point me to pertinent information.

my sister-in-law has a 1985 Larson, 19 ft. it has a i-6 motor and mercruiser outdrive. I'm not exactly sure what the motor is, and she's not boat savy, so couldn't tell me for sure. She ran into some problems over the weekend and I'm trying to do some research to help solve her problems.

Here's the details I know:
Saturday she put the boat in the river for only the third time this year. Last time was july 4th weekend.
the boat has a complete motor rebuild about 5 years ago when her ex originally bought it.
as far as I know he's done routine maintenance and winterizing as necessary
the boat was converted to electronic ignition within the past 5 years.
Saturday the rubber exhaust boot split open. it was replaced.
at the same time, I removed the lower and found the water circulation pump was in BAD shape. The plastic pickup tube was completely melted to the point that it had run back down over the pump unit.
The rubber circulating pump appeared that it was chipped and broken off, not melted.
The boat has a closed cooling system with antifreeze.
I also replaced the entire circulating pump unit.

After the exhaust and pump repairs, I took the boat out on the water. I ran approx 3000 RPM for about 45 minutes, shut the motor off, started back up fine. Ran another 30 minutes at 3000, including shutting down to idle for a bit while we coasted and chatted with some other boaters.

throttled back up to head for home and was running about 3500 RPM for 10 minutes. My ballcap happened to fly off, so I throttled down to recover it. The boat was sputtering through the carb and didn't want to idle properly. After turning around, I noticed smoke out of the engine compartment. Shut down and lifted the cover. the antifreeze was boiling over. At that point, we got a tow back to shore. I let it sit and cool. The boat will still crank, so hopefully no harm to the motor.

The obvious thing is to replace the thermostat, but I'm also not familiar with the closed cooling system, and thinking of the possibility that the rubber chips from the pump in the outdrive might have the water circulating system blocked?

Anyway, that's where my research is at. if anyone happens to have links to diagrams or other information related to this problem it would be very much appreciated!

thanks all....

That's almost certainly your problem. If you didn't find all the pieces from your old impeller, they are still in the system and clogging things up. Check your thermostat for pieces as well.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... I saw 1 of those motors, once, along time ago,...

Follow the waterline from the drive, 'n see where it goes to 1st,...
Ya might need to pull the caps off the H/E to find All the pieces...

Just to add to what I wrote - the good news is there would NOT be any pieces in your thermostat like I mentioned. Since you have a closed system, the "antifreeze side" would not be affected. But the heat exchanger would be.

thanks for the input. confirms what I was thinking.

Bad news is she's 300 miles away from me to help her out, but she's got some friends up there that should be able to assist.
