I'm having some trouble getting this 90hp johnson(J90TLEOR) to fire up. The only way I can get it to start is to spray some premix in the carbs. I thought it was the leaking primer solenoid lever so i replaced it. No luck. The fuel is coming from a clean small tank. Everything seems to be fine all the way to the carbs. The primer is getting fuel into the carbs. I have drained them 3 times now just to make sure. Im kind of unsure on the process from there. After I spray the premix in it will idle fine and run normal. I can restart it no problem for hours. Next day its back to spraying the premix. I guess I'm just looking for some ideas on what I can check next. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated. Thanks guys.

"Everything seems to be fine all the way to the carbs"
You said it
Clean out the carburettors especially the orifices
Maybe the choke/primer solenoid too. ok good one, i see you have checked that
Is the fuel shooting out of the primer hose when you use the choke to start?
Maybe with your broken rectifier the battery wasnt getting enough charge so on cold start up the solenoid dosent have enough volts to make the fuel pulse fast enough.
I think it should have 12 V on it when key is pushed

Not going to be a dirty carb issue based on this......

The primer hose shoots a heck of a stream out of the line to the top and the bottom carb. That battery gets taken out and charged after every time I mess with the boat. I'm wondering why the fuel doesn't seem to get into the manifold when using the primer? Spraying premix works every single time! It fires right up!

Look real closely at your primer system. Disconnect the primer lines that go to the back of the carbs, pump the primer bulb up, turn over the mtr with the key pushed in and see if the lines pee fuel. If they do, check the nipples on the carbs to make sure they're open.

Re: last thread of the month! I swear! Fuel probem?

I did not crank the engine with the key depressed, I did disconnect the lines and then pushed it in there was fuel discharging from both. If I turn the lever in the opposite direction and pump the bulb it should prime the engine, correct? when I do that there is a lot of pressure build up. my thinking is with that lever is in the manual position couldnt you essentially pump as much fuel into the manifold as you want. I guess what I'm asking is in the manual position can you pump freely or is there something that will stop the flow into the engine?

It will freely pump and will freely flood

That's why there is a "manual" position on the solenod. If you ever get caught with a dead battery, your switch the lever to Manual and rope start it. Switch back to automatic and go boating. The primer solenoid can ONLY inject fuel when the primer bulb has pressurized the system. Unless you do that you can push on the key all day and it won't do anything. The solenoid operates a valve, it is not a puimp.

I have tried it several times in the normal operating position and i tried pumping the bulb with it in the manual position. Bottom line is the thing won't start until I spray premix in the carbs

I should say after a day of sitting it won't start without it. But once it does it will start just fine for hours

Have you done what post #5 said to try?

You can check the nipples with a packing slip wire.

Re: last thread of the month! I swear! Fuel probem?

Ill check the nipples after work today. I did not do excactly what post 5 says yet but I know the primer is functioning correctly. With the primer engaged should you be able to see fuel entering the carbs. I dont really know what is supposed to happen once the fuel comes out of the primer line. Does it fill the bowls? does it drain directly into the manifold? Can you see fuel entering with the butterflies open? I dont really know what is supposed to happen once the primer discharges?

No it shoots into the manifold behind the butterfly. The hoses should not be connected to the bowl.
I suggest you do post #5 and also post or add a photo where the tubes from the primer a connected too
You might be able to see it discharge with the butterfly open, but pulling the line as in post #5 and checking the nipple is clear is the easiest way.
In normal operation the discharge is sucked in as extra fuel for cold starting ie choke

Re: last thread of the month! I swear! Fuel probem?

could it be somehwere between where the gas line connects and the needle and seat? I had one that was pumping good from the fuel pump but would not run unless i sprayed it and this was the cause. Right where the line went into the carbs, bothe had blockage from bad fuel line and thus not allowing the bowls to fill. If nothing else, you could blow into your inlet line to see if air passes

Re: last thread of the month! I swear! Fuel probem?

Figured it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I rebuilt the carbs at the end of last season, the stinking gaskets didnt have holes where the primer fuel should through the carb to the manifold! Punched a hole in the correct position, hooked everything back up, and the old girl fired up with one crank! thanks for all of the input guys. Now on to the next issue!

I know, I'm on my own for 11 days! I'm sure this thing won't be running by then!
