Hey all,

I have a chance to purchase a late 60s Evinrude outboard for $70. The model is 100693R. It runs but the lower unit is shot. I have a '67 Johnson 100HP and '73 Johnson 85HP. Are any of the Evinrude parts interchangeable? Is it worth picking up the Evinrude outboard either for parts or to rebuild the lower unit? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, your 73 motor will be a completely different design than the older 100hp.

How bad off is the lower unit? Is it an electric shift?

The '66 that you are contemplating is very similar to your '67 Johnson 100. There are some mighty valuable parts on it. Carburetor, for one. '66 also has the battery ignition system.

Have you verified this yourself? Does "shot" mean damaged or what? I ask because I bought a 1962 Johnson 75HP that was described the same way by the PO. Turned out the electric shift gearcase had the wrong lube in it and worked perfectly for ten years after being serviced properly. Good luck!

I haven't inspected myself, just what the current owner tells me. It is electric shift.

Also, I just bought the "73" Monday night and the seller told me it was a 73. A peek at the model number indicates it's a 1970. Not sure if that makes the parts from the older 100HP any more interchangable. Another thought...the seller told me the "73" also "runs fine." Guess I should have my doubts about that last part, huh? :)

I haven't verified myself. I've only spoke to the owner over the phone and he indicated the lower unit was shot. Not sure how extensive the damage. It is electric shift so maybe I can cross my fingers that's the case!

Re: Late 60s 100HP Evinrude - worth it?

I decided to make the purchase and had the 66 Evinrude delivered last Friday. Lower unit was separated but everything appears to be there. I have to finish some projects IN the house and hope to get out in the garage in the next couple weeks to start assessing the damage - if any.

I now have three late 60s Johnnyrudes so will hopefully be able to piece at least one workable outboard together for spring! :D
