I just replaced one of my solenoids (down solenoid) with OEM # 89-853654A1

http://www.sterndrive.info/sitebuil...ictures/M-72370-Mercury-outboard-solenoid.jpg

the only way i can get it to work is if i hook the green wire coming from my switch to the larger terminal running to the motor. shouldnt the wire coming from my switch be wired to one of the smaller terminals and one of the larger terminals running to the ground and the other to the motor? it seems to be working just fine hooked up like this but the whole reason i bought a new solenoid was because i broke the smaller terminal on my old one.

Hey marvin. We try to keep the Boat section free of engine/drive questions. I am assuming you meant Mercruiser not Mercury, so I moved this to the I/O section. Would be best if you supplied as much reference info as possible. Good luck!

No I meant Mercury Ouatboard Tilt/Trim issue. this isnt motor related...

I believe an I/O only has one solenoid aswell

OK, so I moved it into the Mercury section now. I understand the confusion, but we tie trim/tilt to motor stuff. The technical experience resides with the engine guys for this example. Definitely not a perfect science deciding where this stuff goes . . . I made the Mercruiser assumption based on the sterndrive.info link

Good luck again! :)

Re: Late 70's Mercury Tilt Question

It sounds like the solenoid is not closing. The green wire from the trim panel should be on the small stud. The base of the solenoid needs to be grounded. Battery voltage should be on one of the large studs, the trim motor on the other large stud.

Sorry, let me be more clear. Make sure the base of the solenoid is well grounded.

Is there another small stud opposite the one in the picture? If so, one is ground, the other is for the green wire.

there are 4 studs total, 2 large 2 small.

so...

green trim wire from trim motor to one large stud, power to the other. green trim switch wire to one small stud, ground to the other small stud?

Re: Late 70's Mercury Tilt Question

That is correct. Are the small studs marked for function? Does one of them indicate ground?

Re: Late 70's Mercury Tilt Question

If you have a sensitive ohmmeter, put it across one of the primary (small) studs to the metal base. Now try the other primary stud. One should have zero resistance to the metal base. That should be the ground side. if that doesn't work, either the solenoid is bad or the wiring is suspect elsewhere.
