We finally go a nice day on Sunday so that the owner of the 1989 Bayliner 2755 Sunbridge 460 King Cobra could take us out on the lake for a test ride. We got to McPhee Reservoir with the boat and were informed by another boater at the ramp that there were game wardens everywhere on the lake, checking for licenses and safety gear. I'm thinking this could be bad, since the owner has not bought the 2005 registration stickers for the boat and has lost the license plates for the trailer, but that was the least of our problems. He at least had life jackets buried deep in the back of the boat. It started rough, and would quit whenever he reduced the idle to the shift range. It finally warmed up enough so that we could pull away from the dock, but then wouldn't run smooth for the 1st 5 minutes or so. It finally evened out, running at around 4000 rpm. Then it started missing and then smoothed out, and then missed and smoothed out and kept doing that as we headed back to the dock after about 15 minutes on the water. All this time the voltmeter needle was flopping back and forth continually. Got back to the dock and the boat quit, never to start again - everything was dead - not a gauge would move, so we were done for the day. Based on another post in this section, I'm hoping it's only the alternator. I hauled it to a mechanic yesterday, and hoping to find out soon. When we backed away from the dock, I noticed a whine coming from the outdrive, but it went away shortly. This was the 1st time out for that boat this year. Was used once last year and once the year before, so lack of use may be contributing to some of this. 1/4 tank of gas, 80 gallon tank. Engine is 2 years old, no more than 20 hours on it. Outdrive serviced, new impeller last fall when winterized. Price dropped from $7,000 to $5,500 before we got to the lake for the test - owner is tired of dealing with it - is busy and has too much money anyway. Appears to be a good, sound boat that needs to be cleaned up and taken care of, which is where I come in. Looks like a good deal if this latest malfunction is not something major. I will get it back on the lake for a real test drive once the mechanic is done. Any comments?
