I've never heard one mentioned here. I actually had to look them up to find out what they were.

Basically two kinds of impellers get used here for sterndrives... Mercruiser and aftermarket, and the major difference in aftermarket is that they're cheaper and less well made.

I can't imagine anyone using an expensive aftermarket impeller in a sterndrive... so what if running dry won't destroy it, it's still not good for the engine?

...or the outdrive. Hot exhaust goes thru the outdrive and it relies on water going thru it to keep things from burning things up.

I can see where they would be nice if you were running in low water conditions. Some of the bayou bottoms around here in the swamp are soft river silt, that you can't feel the outdrive dragging in it but it is thick enough to cut off the water flow. First warning you usually get to shut down is when the overheat buzzer goes off. Unfortunately by then the impellor has disintegrated from running dry. Would be nice if it would survive longer than it takes for the buzzer to go off, so you could shut down, get it out of the silt, then keep cruising.
