Lazer II Prop on a 175hp Merc.?

I just purchased a Lazer II prop, 25 pitch off of ebay.... Mounted it on the motor last night and it fits perfectly... However, I noticed that this prop's outer hub diameter is around 4.5" at the front, which is about 1/2" larger in diameter than my 4-blade Trophy prop. It's not larger than the gear case but getting close to matching it.
So my question is, is this Lazer 48-16550A45-25P, spec'd for use on my engine, or is more suited for 200hp and up...
I'm just looking for 200 less rpms and some more speed, but I'm wondering if this diameter increase may cause even more rpm loss.
I'm going to try it to confirm, but wanted your opinion...

Hiya,

I don't think there's any difference in the diameter of the gearcase on any of the V6's. I think the prop hub should be more or less level with the gearcase... from what you say, it sounds like maybe your old prop was originally off a different motor with a slightly smaller gearcase (maybe an I6?).

I think it's the overall diameter of the blades that will affect rpms, not the hub.

HTH

Brent

The Trophy prop is about 4" in diameter vs the 4.5" Lazer... The Trophy is specifically specs for my motor and other v6's. So I'm confident that that prop is ok (as it runs well also). There is probably 3/8" step down from the gear case to the Trophy tube. With the Lazer however is only about 1/8" step...

Interesting, All the props Ive had on my 150, (and there have been a few lately), have been even with the gearcase. The stepdown fits just inside the gearcase and the prop case is exactly the same diamiter as the gear case. You could put a straightedge from the gearcase to the prop.

Exactly the same?? Are you sure Lube...

Regardless, the Trophy prop has no step down. It is signifigantly smaller in diameter compared to the Lazer...

Yep, I never had one that stepped down as you describe. You can run into problems if the hub is small enough that exhaust can escape around it. Did you ever have problems hooking up with the old smaller prop?

Re: Lazer II Prop on a 175hp Merc.?

The Merc/Mariner Mag 2/XR 4 had the smaller lower unit and ran a smaller hub LAZER prop. In the late 80's the bigger hub lazers had an odd pitch the smaller hub had a even number pitch. The smaller hub Lazer 2's would give the 175 and 200 and partial over the hub effect (kinda like a chopper) and on certain high performance applications they were BADDDD on wholeshots. My 200 Mariner ruined many of 200 Yamaha/225 Yamaha day! I ran a 26 Lazer 2 on a Thunderbolt Tunnel Pad 18 foot.
