Bought a new to me boat a few weeks back for a real good price. I needed to move it quickly so instead of sending it to my house and inspecting it before launching I took the chance and put it in the water.

Previous owner assured me it's was good to go.

Well, long story short...I am now taking on water...not a huge amount but enough for me to pull it out. The earliest my guy could pull it was this Friday.

As of now the bilge is kicking on at an interval of 70 min or so for a duration of 30-40 seconds. Well within the capabilities of the pump. For safety, I installed a second bilge on a separate battery in case I have issues with the first pump failing. I check on the boat every 12 hours and run the engines for 10 min each time to make sure I'm charged for the next 12 hour visit.

I am assuming it's a u joint below or the shift cable. You can see water weeping in at the bottom of the starboard transom assembly (twin screw I/O) I have changed them before so I am fully aware of the job ahead.

My question is,

If it's my U joint bellow, will it rip worse than it already is if the motor is run? I would believe it would cause further damage even running the engine because the water would be getting spun around inside the boot and cause it to rip even more..but at the same time what the hell is the difference if it's full of water anyhow? it's gonna leak regardless.

Im pulling it Friday and was thinking about taking it out for a few hours before to do some fishing but have some concerns about it taking on water faster than it is now. I have a few hours to kill before the guy cam pull the boat so I might as well try to get one last 2 hour expedition on it before pulling it for the season.

Any input from amyone who might have had a similar issue? other than the leak the boat is running pretty well.

It's a 27ft Carver Montego twin screw w/180 HP 4 cylinder mercuiser engines.

I qualify this by saying there are more experienced people here that will chime in. As far as I know, you don't want ANY water in your u-joint bellows. Aside from leaking into the boat it will ruin the u-joints. They are probably dry rotted and torn. Running the motor is not the issue its the up and down of the trim and steering right to left that will cause them to tear more. It could be the shift shaft bellows as well.

Well aware...like I said, done em before. Damage is done..my question is, if I use it IF it's the u joint bellow will the leak drastically increase?

If it's the u joint bellows the boat has only been in the water for less than a week. If I pull it Friday and take the drive off and lube the s>>t out of it I probably can save it....probably...

Ayuh,.... I'd run it just long enough to get it to the launch, myself,.......

Ya got shore power,..??

If so, I'd hook up a battery charger to the batteries, to make Sure the pumps got good solid power,......

I have 2 solid pumps on 2 separate batteries. Boat comes out tomorrow morning. I am going to refrain from using it before launching it.

Update

leak turned out to be the water pump o ring between the gimbal housing and the drive. The guy must have taken the drive apart and forgot to re install it...basically it was missing

Ouch. That'd do it. About as cheap of a repair as is possible though.

yea...it's a bummer. I lost out on 3 weeks of fishing but at least I know I don't have a serious leak.

I'll do both port and starbord bellows and shift cable boots and gimble bearings before launch next year so I don't have the same worries as this year.

$200 in parts is well worth the money so I am not having to pull the boat because of a stupid problem like I had now.
