Leak were the out drive bolts to the transom

1987 merc cruiser alpha 1 What type of sealer or gasket is used behind the plate.. And can I get enough room to put some sealer behind plate by backing off the 4 bolts.The bolts were lose and you know I run aground!!! Takes less then 5 gallons in 9 hours<br /><br />Thanks <br /><br />John

Look at the gasket set in the upper right hand corner of this page:<br /><br /> http://mercstuff.com/page06.htm <br /><br />Fix it right. If you get water in the gimbal bearing chances are very good it will sieze and have to be replaced.

Could be the bolts were loose because the transom is rotten and compressed. Might want to check that too.

Most likely your transom is soft, I have the same problem right now. Raise the out drive to the trailer position and try to move it up and down while observing the mountiong bolts...if you see any movement you have rot. The best way to fix this is to pull the engine and replace the rotted wood from the inside without cutting the outside skin. You can do it from the outside a little easier but will have some cosmetic work to do.
