I have a '63 gale 15hp that runs ok if not primed....if you pump the primer, gas shoots out of a hole in the top of the carb..lots of gas! ( I assume it's a vent )the motor then bogs down and quits ....repair tech said he rebuilt carb( who knows ) and that I needed a new carb...any ideas what may be causing this and/or how to fix it...

Re: leaking carb

Thump the carb bowl with a screwdriver handle while someone pumps the primer. what is happening, is the float valve is stuck open due to varnish..Carbs could proly stand a rebuild. But finding a set of gaskets for an old carb like that is like pickin all the right horses, I'm sure. So see if you can jar it loose. Not hard, just thump it. a few times until the fuel quits.

Howdy Heibs.

Need a new carb!!?? @#$% (I don't agree).

Try 12Footers suggestion, maybe just stuck.

Carb kit for a FD-17 Johnson will work. Many JohnnyRude dealers can supply that, you might also try NAPA.

Good luck. :)
