im working on a 1979 Johnson 140. the original tilt/trim motor was shot so i replaced the motor. i couldnt get it to extent or contract the cylinder for the longest time until i noticed a little screw on the side. im guessing it was the manual release valve. well i tightenend it and the motor will raise up and down.

came back to the shop this morning and its still leaking around the same spot. now it wont pick itself up either.

do i need a new o-ring kit?

its hard to see but you can barely make out the fluid dripping down the mount.

Re: Leaking Fluid - help!

It has to be rather tight to work

a larger square shank screwdriver with a wrench on the shank will do it.

If it still leaks it needs replacing, there are no replacement seals for the valve, make sure you get the correct one, there are 2 types .

You have to remove the circlip first to extract it .

when i replace the valve, whats the best way to refill the resevoir? there is a screw about 3/4 from the top. should i fill to that point, or should i pull the lower unit off and fill it laying down?

Re: Leaking Fluid - help!

fill it where it is and cycle it a few times, it self bleeds.
Refill after cycling.
