I have a mecury 1150, 115 horse power, Thunderbolt, I think 1979 from canada, in-line
6 cly. At first the middle carb was leaking from the top cap where the filter goes. I replaced the bottom gasket and I think its fine now but It seems that the float; where the needle and seat is on the top carb is filling up with to much gas and leaking out of the drain hole on the side of the cap. Now this is under the top cap that I mentioned earlier... the top cap unscrews at the top(one screw) :) (this cap is were the gas lines screw in to, too connect to each carb filter cap) , the cap that it sits on I unscrewed it , it has 2 screws, and a 0 ring gasket and thats were the needle and seat is and that looks to me to be a float. Now when you remover this part it has a hole on the side of it were it is draining gas from so I think that it is allowing to much gas to fill up in the bowl causing it to over flow. Let me mention that gas is over flowing out of the carbs as well. I think just the top carb is over flowing but cant tell as of yet. How do I takle this job I am inclined to follow instructions, so if they are clear I should be fine, and have pictures of my parts if any one can send me a personal email I can send the pictures of what I have.

Re: leaking gas from top carb

Just been through that with my 115 hp inline 6 cylinder '89 unit. It had junk holding the needle valves open, when pumping the bulb - gas would also pour out and the bulb never got hard. I had to take off the top of the bowl (with needle valve assembly attached) and remove pin from the one lever the bowl pushes up on, this allowed the other lever to release the needle valve and fall out. I then shot carb cleaner through it. I still have other possible gas problems so it seems I must now remove the carbs completly and get a manual and clean out every area in each carb. You might be able to get a manual at the local library - I just ordered an all inclusive generic "outboard engines: Maintenance, Troubleshooting" by author ED SHERMAN from Walmart.com for $14.

I REMOVED THE CARB TODAY, IM GOING TO INSPECT THE NEEDLE IN A FEW DAYS. NOW THAT YOU MENTIONED IT , MY BULB STOP GETTING HARD WHEN THIS STARTED, SO IF ANY ONE ELSE HAS ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS I'LL TAKEM. I ALSO ORDERED MY MANUAL TO HELP ME ALONG WITH THIS PROCESS. OH AND LET ME KNOW HOW YOUR'S TURNED OUT.

Change all 3 needle and seats, as well as the floats. The springs lose tension and you will not be able to seal the carbs even with new Needles and seats.

Do not be surprised if the carbs spew a bit of gas when you tilt the engine up.

TMD

Re: leaking gas from top carb

I really thank everyone for your help, I also found out that my floats were stuck to the bottom
of the float bowls. I called the shop and picked up the rebuilding kits for all three carbs and the floats for 94.00. oh yea,man I called a guy and he wanted 60.00 an hour....man it tooke two 1/2 hours to get the thing apart... well if you have any more guidence along this trip, I welcome it, and I'll let you all know the results, should be done by the weekend. I have only worked on 1 boat before,my 69 johnson...rebuilt lower unit, replace shifter linkadge(brass connector for the shifter rod) and had it running like a champ, so this should'nt be to bad

The manual came in and is great for getting understanding on how each item works but the manual for the engine (covers several years) is still needed for specifics.
I now understand the ignition system - which is where I'll now be concentrating on. - I only have spark on 1 & 4.

I changed my floats everyone, I found out that the floats were stuck to the bottom of the float bowls, the new floats have a plastic tube down the middle and are just a hair smaller than the originals. The old floats were stuck on the pin that comes up the middle. put It all back together and pumped up the bulb it got hard, no leaks, fired it up, adjusted the carbs and purs like a kitten.......THANK YOU ALL for your input You saved me about $400.00 dollars in repairs.....it pays/saves to be mechanically incline. I love my life

The Marine Doctor - your good - yes it seems my packs are bad - I just came to the same conclusion. I just finished testing and every trigger wire puts fire out to the working pack's section (if you know what I mean)! Stator wires checked out ok with the manuals stated resistance (I left them hooked up to the packs when I took the readings though). The rectifier seems good - 1.8M ohm battery to other two and infinity the other way. Think I should buy used packs?

John - Glad to see you found & fixed your's!

FishermanRich...never ever...buy used packs. Brand new packs may be expensive but they come with all the latest updates. While having a 1 year warranty is not too shabby either.

TMD

John, looks like you picked up a great deal! I just read a post where they were discussing rebuilding a blown cylinder - looked like the cost of parts was going to run about 7-800.
I can't tell were your located, did you turn off something in your personal profile?
