Just bought a 8hp merc in asutralia, apparently it is a tohatsu motor. I have a query. Afetr running the motor it appears as though the gasket between the block and head is leaking water. Salt appears on the gasket after it has dried out. The mechanic has told me that the salty air is attracted to the gasket material and is condensating on it. Just wondering what your opinions are??

Re: leaking gasket???

hello
wow I think I want some of what that guy is drinking:). good day mate
anyway I am not looking at your motor. you say its leaking? is it actually leaking water or is it just a white feathery coating of salt that appears at the gasket seam? the white feathery powder is about normal for saltwater use. salt is terrible stuff and actually wick throug the gasket layers, most all saltwater engines do this. here we use a spray called fluid film to help keep the corrosion down. if its actually dripping water you have a leak. if you have that much salt air under the hood you have a leak. the pistons would not tolerate that much salt.
anyway
good luck and keep posting
