Leaking hydraulic fluid around piston and rod asmby- 1983 Johnson -

Took the boat out this weekend all seemed fine. Took it home and flushed the engine with fresh water and went to put the motor up.

The hydraulic power trim/tilt struggled and started making funny sounds. I went back to look at it and there was a milky white substance coming out of the top of the right piston/rod assembly.

Not sure if a gasket blew out or what.

IS this fixable and if so how can I fix it? Does the engine and power trim/tilt need to be removed from the boat completly or can I do it while still on the boat?

How do you get the piston assembly apart? I can't even eget the screw out on the resivor so I can't even add fluid to run it again and get a better picture of what is goign on but if it is a seal or gasket how do I get this monster apart?

Sorry I have either an 1982 or 1983 75hp outboard Johnson motor. Motor is in working condition so that is why I am so upset the triem/tile is not working.

IS saw on a site that there are several o-rings but I don;t have a clue how to dissassemble the triem/tile. Can it be done with the motor still on the boat? How do you do it?

Lookign for advice and tips.

Raise the lower leg, secure in place and retract the pistons. either by the trim switch or the manual release valve.
Loosen the end cap where the leak is using a spanner wrench, replace seals.
fill system and bleed.

maybe start by ordering the factory service manual so you know what these terms mean, its the best money you can spend on outboards.

Follow Jone's advice. You may find that you only need the seal and wiper on that one side. You might want to purchase just those two items first and replace them before you consider a whole seal kit. You should be able to get the right cap off without too much trouble with a spanner wrench from a local auto parts store. You should not need to remove the piston to work on the cap. I'd also replace the two larger cap o-ring seals before reassembly. If your trim oil is milky, you will need to completely evacuate the system and fill with new oil and rebleed the system.

Thank you for the information. I am also going to get a impact driver to try to get the resivor screw to break loose.

By the way where is the manual release valve and the bleed valves for the hydraulic system?

Here are some shots of my trim/tilt:

Just need to know where the ports/screws for bleeding the system and releasing the pressure are located. Can somebody explain where to look?

theres approx 45 pages in the service manual dedicated to the t/tilt ,
on mine the release valve is accessed thru the port side mounting bracket.

before touching that screw, put a sawhorse under the leg.:)
and you'll need the impact screwdriver for that screw, something like 45lbs torque.

what condition is the transom? theres some brown discharge coming out the bilge drain.

Thank you. The brown stuff is bolt losener and some hinge oil/grease that was on there. I tryed coatign the metal with a metal protectant to help reduce corrosion and when I spray the bolt losener on it it drips away.
