Hi Guys,

thanks for the help in advance.

I have a 2000 Bayliner Capri 1750 LS with the 135h.p. mercrusier sterndrive.

I dropped the lower unit to have the fin rewelded due to some damage.
Removal/Installation seemed to smooth

But now i have noticed lower gear lube leaking. I cleaned it off and found the leak.

Below, i believe what is the cavitation plate where the 4 screws/bolts go on the lower unit drive there are 2 holes one on each side. I dont know what these are called But if you are facing the boat only the one on the right is dripping lower gear lube....

Re: Leaking Lower Drive

Cool! An Easy one! Welcome to iboats.

There is an oil passage between the upper and lower gearcases. It's less than 1/4". But there's an o-ring (actually called a quad ring) that goes into a little recess on the lower half alongside the water pump. That's probably missing. You can loosen the hardware connecting the top and bottom enough to check this out and slip one in if it's damaged or missing. You need less than 1/2" of clearance.

Before loosening the hardware, bleed off any pressure inside and you won't lose much lube. Just remove the upper vent screw and put it right back in. Top off the gearlube when you're done. Have some rags handy, it's a little on the messy side.
