Leaking Oil Pump on 1988 Yamaha 90

I've been having an issue with oil leaking out through the prop exhaust. I was told that the check valve inside the oil pump was leaking by and a quick fix would be to install a check-valve in each oil lines enroute to the carbs. This was done but oil continues to leak out the prop exhaust. I was then told that the seal on the backside of the oil pump is leaking and the oil then leaks into the 3rd cylinder and then out the prop exhaust and then on to the ground. My solution was to install a small quick closing fuel shut off vavle which I purchased at Lowes for $6 bucks, I then shut off the oil to the pump and this has solved my problem, the only problem is you have to remember to open the valve before you run the engine. I was then told that if all the oil that remained in the pump leaks out, the next time you run the engine and the oil pump looses prime then you have a major problem. The mechanic says I need to replace the oil pump. I'd like to do this myself but Yamaha has completely changed the design of the pump and not sure of the installation procedure.
Any help on this would greatly be appreciated. If this oil pump does loose prime is this a self priming pump? Or if anyone knows if the installation of this new style pump is something a Yamaha Service Tech should touch only?
Thanks in advance

Re: Leaking Oil Pump on 1988 Yamaha 90

installing the new oil pump kit is not rocket science but the lines and installation procedure as well as adjustments and bleeding procedures will need to come from about a 92 model and up motor. the old kein pump has not been avalible for some time.
neither pump was self priming.
for the hour labor that it should take to install the pump I would take it to an autherized service facility.
