Just had my 1966 23 foot Lancer lunched. In replaceing the tilt motor, I had to remove the rubber bootNow. it seems to be leakingThe. bilge pump iis holding it for the moment , But is there an alternative to hauling the boat back out? Like an underwater sealent that I could spread around the edges of the boot to get me thru the season?

Thanks.

Water over the dam now Bob, but why did you have to remove the boot?

The boat was designed with a Buick V-6 in it.I put in a chevy 350 when I realized v-6 didn't have enough power and also had too many inherent problems.i.e. water in cylinders etc.So with the OMC 800 setup,+ the 350,there's very little room to get to the tilt motor without pulling the boot. However, it is exactly the right engine for that hull.

Gotcha Bob. Good luck with the reseal. Did you have to remove the boot from the intermediate housing. That'd be the tough one to clean and reseal. Boot to transom 'd be a breeze.

Thanks for the come back.Yes, I had to remove the boot from the iintermediate housing and I suspect that's where the leak is.
Any words of wisdom in resealing that part? i.e. silicone rubber?
I'm exploring having the boat hauled out and installing a new boot.
Getting the stainless steel clamp set properly on the boot is difficult because of the boot design.

Sorry Bob, I had my Intermediate housing on the bench when I did it. It was easy enough then to properly clean and goop up the sealing surface.

Seems to me that you'd need to be tripple jointed to do it in the boat. Maybe you can find an old pro. As for a new boot, if yours is original and in good shape, I might be inclined to stick with it. I've heard, at least at some point, aftermarket boots did not have the durability of the originals. Mine is now 31 y/o, suffered thru the California sun and smog plus a removal and reinstallation. It has never been moored though.
