Hi all,
My 1998 Mercury 150 V6 is leaking hydraulic fluid. This motor had been sitting idle for 8 years, and I'm beginning to try to bring it and the boat back into service. One of the first things I did was lift the engine slightly to be able to tow it. The trim/tilt unit worked OK, but jerked and stuttered after lifting the engine a little bit. I drained and refilled the unit (lifting and lowering and topping up several times). It then worked smoothly and held the fluid fine for a week or two. This weekend I took the boat and motor out to a local lake to check to see if the hull was watertight (it wasn't, but that's because I left the drain plug at home). When I got the rig home, I noticed hydraulic fluid leaking out. I'm guessing that I lost 4-8 ounces of fluid before the leaking stopped. Are seals available? Are these units even serviceable or are they supposed to be permanently sealed?
Thanks,
Lewis

Re: leaking tilt/trim

You say the motor has been sitting for 8 years and it's a 1998? The math doesn't work on my end. anyway you should be able to rebuild the unit. It probably only needs a shaft seal and o-rings. good luck!

Thanks for the reply! Well, see, it was sitting in another dimension.... Actually it's an '88 and I just didn't proofread my post well enough. I'll take it out and see if I can't find somebody to order the seals and rings from.
Lewis
