I'm thinking of buying a boat with an exististing problem. I'm close to ruling it out as its just a huge red flag to me.

The seller stated to me the boat had a leaky carb, and otherwise ran just fine. (nice contradiction) There is a problem but its fine?

Anyways, can someone give me the basic difference between fuel injection and carb motors and how a leaky carb would effect performance and how difficult of a repair are we talking here?

Is this something you can do yourself to fix or do you want to take it to a shop and what is an approx cost on doing this repair at a marina more than likely or estimate. I just need to know if this is worth getting into or not.

Good question...but answer this "what came first? The chicken or the Egg?"...
The carbs were first... so basically the carbs meter fuel and air into the engine..its done by having a bowl fill will fuel provided by the pumping of the fuel pump. in order to prevent fuel squirtinng everywhere carbs have a float that sits in a bowl that in tern moves a needle up and down to regulate the filling of the bowl..

question is..what do you mean by leaky carb? is it a gasket?..is the needle not sitting tight.. in any case you can rebuild carbs pretty inexpensively and clean them with some kind of carb spray or soaking.. so your question about carbs is pretty easily answered..

IF that is the true issue then I would think you would be ok to buy it..I wouldnt recomend doing that unless you bring a good mechanic with you to go over it first..MONEY WELL SPENT!....

I'm not too familiar with fuel injection other than that its pump driven fuel to injectors that feed the engine..no carb in those motors..

hope that helps..

$5K is a lot of lolly, if you aren't familiar with boats do yourself a huge favor and have it surveyed, its doesn't cost an arm and a leg, you can split the cost with the seller. Around here its less than $400.

Carb leaks will be the least of your problems if the stringers and transom are soaking wet and starting to rot.

The surveyor will inspect the engine too.

leaky carb as in...gas leaking OUT, or air leaking in??

one is messy, the other will blow and engine..

to rebuild all the carbs, the bill at a shop would be many hundreds of dollars.

take that off the cost...

if everything else checks out ok.

you will need to check the lower unit, the compression, the fuel system..
the tilt n trim set up...the motor height and rigging...

any reciepts from previous repairs?

its a buyers market
