Just got this 1962 15hp sea king running. This was my first rebuild and it's runnin sweet just curious if I'm adjusting lean/rich knobs properly.

I read manual for initial knob setting 3/4 turn out from fully seated. At this setting it would pop every few seconds, I loosened the low speed knob until I got the pop to stop. What else should I look for when fine tuning both the low speed and high speed knobs?

Re: Lean/rich adj. knobs?

Don't make such a big deal of it. You have the motor running, so the preliminary settings are close enough and there is no need to go through all that 3/4 turns (or whatever) stuff.

And remember, you can't fine tune it in a barrel.

So, the motor runs. Now to fine tune it, put the motor on a boat, on the lake, in forward gear, and run it at full throttle and adjust the high speed knob. Turn it to the right till it starts to lose power, then back to the left till it regains power. Too far to the left will cause it to "four cycle" or make a chugging sound. Next, slow down to a slow idle and do the same thing with the slow speed knob. When adjusting the slow speed knob, if it is turned too far to the right, it will usually pop or sneeze (called a lean sneeze). Turn it back to the left till it quits sneezing, and leave it there. Repeat the process to make sure they are right, then leave them alone unless something makes a major change like temperature or altitude.

Now wasn't that easy?
