1995 Four Winns 5.0 I/O

Boat was empty from winter storage. Took boat to gas station and filled to the rim (25 gallons) with 89 octane. Left gas cap off and it rained the next day before I realized what I had done.

What should I do? Siphon gas out? Put an additive in? Push my luck and hope not too much water got in (yeah right), please share advice from experience.

Thanks.

1. Put a water seperating fuel filter on it.

2. Add some water miscifier like "HEET" to the tank.

3. Go fishing. :)

not as dumb as the guy who went to the full service gas station. didn't supervise filling, the kid pump 20 gallons into the rod holder, before the owner noticed. stupid human tricks.

JB and Boomayl,

Dumb is right! - I was just hoping no one would notice! Hopefully, this is one of those stupid things you do once and learn from it.

Thanks for the advice. We'll give the water separator a try and see what happens.

Can water in the fuel damage the engine? Or, will the boat just not run well or not run at all?

Actually, if you can find a way to vaporize it water will give you an incredible power increase. Unfortunately the way it enters the engine, from gas tank contamination, just causes the plugs to foul out.

The fortunate thing is that a water seperator filter will remove nearly all the water and the additive will help keep it up in suspension to insure that it does not just stay pooled in the bottom of your tank. Once any water gets thru to the combustion chamber, as long as the engine stays up to temp and is running it will go right out the exhaust.

Water left sitting in the carb float bowl will cause some corrosion of the aluminum. Just get your filter and go out and have lots of fun. Run your tank as empty as you dare before filling back up. Use another can of additive then change the filter after the second tank.

You may not have gotten all that much water in the tank anyway. As long as water was not running into the filler from collecting on large surfaces around the opening.

A lot of marina gas gets water in it as well. This is why a filter is good insurance.

It couldn't have gotten that much in the tank. You fuel filler is probably 2-1/2" in diameter. If it was facing straight up and it rained an inch overnight, which would be a lot of rain, that would only be 5 cubic inches of water down the filler. (One gallon = 231 cubic inches) So that would only be about 3 ounces of water. Or just about 1/3 cup in the tank.

WWII planes benefitted from a water injector that would allow the planes to operate longer under higher power and not burn up.... but that's another thread :)

A little water will burn up and go away, your situation sounds minimal, very minimal.

Just add heat, and go burn off the tank,id be schocked it it affected preformance under the circumstances you have desrcibed.

I'd sell the boat really cheap, give me a call and I'll take it off your hands!!!

Just kidding, the fuel/water seperator is a great idea; you should really have one installed anyway just for good measure.

I use WaterZorb (any boat store)...worked much better than heet (red, don't use yellow in two strokes). WZ coatains no alcohol, which now that I think of it, you might want to read this through...I would do my damnedest to get that water out now, thanks to our inept leaders

mercurymarine.com/ethanol
