Model #

I dunno if they're all duo prop but there's a boat with a king cobra duo prop at my marina. And the king cobra is bigger than a cobra.

OMC, in it's finer days, named 3 completely different outdrives the King Cobra.
1. The standard dog clutch cobra behind some engines was called King Cobra.
2. The cone clutch OMC drive 89 to 94 or 5, not real sure yet. Known as the King Cobra.
3. Then there is the King Cobra built during the OMC/Volvo joint venture, also know as the SX Cobra, but of course OMC decided to call them, you guessed it, KING COBRA.

Post a picture of your outdrive, or post some numbers, they can be checked outl.

So is this the one hard to find parts for?

Nope, parts are available. The problem is trained techs to work on major repairs and things you can't.

1. The standard dog clutch cobra behind some engines was called King Cobra.
If it was a drive behind a 7.4L, 7.5L, or 8.2L engine from 87, 88, or 89, it was the Dog-Clutch, 108oz oil capacity drive and was called "King" Cobra.

AS Don indicated, later years the name "King" Cobra was used with several other later model cone-clutch drives.

It doesn't really matter what you call yours.

If yours is a 1988 model year drive and was behind a 5.7L V-8 it will be the 64oz oil capacity model.

If you get an OEM service manual, the model number you posted (if it's correct) will be listed in the manual along with the gimbal mount model number etc.

Nearly all of the dog-clutch Cobras will "fit" on your gimbal mount. (the yoke/spline-shaft might be the wrong length though, if it's a drive that was behind a BBF/BBC, V-6/I-4 etc)

If you need another drive, now might be the time to consider a new SEI replacement drive as an alternative.

If it's a DUO-Prop, it's not a Dog-clutch Cobra anyway.....It's more than likely an SX (which makes it a Volvo.......mid/late 90's..... )

Oh boy.........now it's an "oil thread"!!!

ANY suitable gear lubricant is ok. Most people like Mercury HP (syn) gear lube, Volvo Penta Gear Lube or Mobil1 Gear lube, Amsoil Marine gear lube, Stabil Marine, etc.

There's others(lots).

It's most important to change it every year or every other year (and/or drain some each year to inspect). Mercury and Volvo (I think) suggest changing it every 100hrs/each year which ever occurs first......

DO this at the end of the season so if you DO discover water intrusion, you can catch it before it sits for 9 months during the "off-season"!!

It makes it a lot easier with a new thread. Some may not read the first 10 posts to notice there was a change in what you were asking.

Hey Don, if that true what is the one only called Cobra? I have a 90 4.3 and thought it was a Cobra.

Different decals. Maybe different gear ratio's or something silly, who knows.

I have pulled King Cobras off of 460's that weren't any different than a regular cobra except the ratio and decals.

Re: Lets clear this up..

I think they used the King word on the drives with engines that had HO at the end, like the 5.8 and 5.7. Could be wrong,, I may have to research that a bit to be sure.

Re: Lets clear this up..

Thanks summer fun, that cleared it up for me, I also have the regular cobra:D

So now next question, it states in the link you gave me talks about the grease zert install on the starboard side in place of the factory plug. Do you or anyone else have a picture of this?

There should be a 1? brass fitting with a grease zerk in it, on the starboard side of the gimbal housing, just in front of the drive mounting area. If this is an aluminum plug, you probably have the original bushing and shift components. These should all be checked and the brass bushing installed.
