Here's the one I keep asking questions about... :) Glastron CV-16 and 150hp Mercury inline 6. I woke up one morning and thought "hey...I want a boat". About a week later I had this. :D
yowie if you and the other half are happy with you boat then that is all that matters. But I would be proud of that boat to

ryan to answer your ? My first boat was a home made wooden boat probably 7 or 8 feet long and all we had for oars were planks we stole off the neighbors chicken house. Now I have had many sense then though

Re: Lets see your first boat.

This is my kind of post...a place to brag and share my story....3 years ago I began dating my current fiancee we went away to her family cottage on Mousham lake in Maine, there I saw the boat...under a ripped blue tarp....complet with tree branches and all...thinking to myself I can rebuild that boat....so everytime we went to Maine only about 3 weekends a year since it was rented out most of the summer season, I would work on the boat....the first year it was just cleaning it out... year number 2 was trying to get the engine started and finding parts for this 1971 motor.....year number three this year...included finding a used lower unit at a resonable price...and labor day weekend....I pulled my first skier...I skied for the first time myself and caught my first fish....how long a road it has been. Here is a picture from the original brochure that came with the boat.

Re: Lets see your first boat.

I live near Ipswich / Brisbane, fave haunt is mouth of Brisbane River.
Hmmm Question how do I upload a piccie of the boat????

Unicorn: I was gonna get a 1/2 cab but I needed something I could put in & retrieve on my own, I have a few disabilitating injuries, so I opted for a smaller boat. Your's looks great! :p

(My missus NOT into boating, or ANY FUN things at all, so me on my own or with mates. (wot could be better than out on the water, sinking a few beers and catching fish,(@ least she can't follow me out there :)

ZmOZ

That is one beautiuful '74 Merc...
Pure nostalgia..
I clearly remember those big thumpers from the 70's when I was too young to afford one new.
And now... I'm just too poor... :D :D So, I too have an "oldie but a goodie"

Yowie.. Ref here http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=002154

Ryan T
Sorry to clog up the post with banter, but in reply to Yowie my,wife and boating buddy is right into boating, and fishing.. we went boat hunting together and we both got boat licences (Compulsory down south) and chose this 80's Unicorn out of many viewings. She is in a lot better shape than many and has low hours.
Coming up to Caloundra later in year. So look out fish...

Re: Lets see your first boat.

somewhere within my old mans vast archives are pics of the original Hydrophobia, Ill have to scan a few, I think there is one of her in full glory, her top up and both the Gamefisher and the McCulloch buzzing away ... for now, here is a boat that is a virtual twin to that boat, and the story of her maiden voyage
3826636.s.jpg

and yes, the following is about a boat like THAT one up there, tiny little boat!

I had a 14 foot Nichols "back in the day" with a 12* horse mc culloch motor, decent motor, once I figured it out ... I put in at cape may harbor, figured I would run it around a bit .. well, it went up on plane with ease, and I was surprised how fast it went (bear in mind, this is a early seventies, smoothbottomed semi v with a narrow beam style boat, not one of the brawny high wide deep boats of today)

one of the four hour boats comes past, loaded with fish .. where??? right off the concrete ship!

for those unfamiliar with Cape May NJ, the concrete ship sits right off the beach at the tip of cape may, where bay and ocean meet

So I go down the canal, past the ferries, and out into the glassine bay

Beautiful day, light wind, flat water - and the fish are ON, whew, sweating a bit

ah, that feels better, a little cool breeze, and the sun isnt beating down anymore.

Then I heard it ... that deep rolling bass of thunder - and the thunderheads are INLAND, but no way to tel which way they are running

twenty years later, DUH, head right into the beach, its a johnboat for christ sakes

but at the time - I was torn, head to the inlet on the ocean side, which was swells or the ferry side which was rapidly chopping up - I chose the bay side, and started making my way back ... the boat was pounding like hell in the chop, I was soaked, and bailing spray out like wild, and the waves kept getting bigger - since I was in the back, the bow was elevated, but STILL ... it was a foot deep boat! I was already mourning the loss of a good running motor if I sank the **** thing, never even considering it would be ME taking a header too

after a roller coaster ride thru the inlet, where a big foamer dropped its top into the boat ... a few inches of water worth, my new boat slid into the relatively calm waters of the canal, with me bailing her out some more, lighting striking all over the place - the purring mc culloch went dead.

only then did I bother to check the gas tank - it was empty.

I switched over to the full one, and the implications of what could have happened if the motor had cut out five minutes ago. one SECOND of lost power and it would have been taps time for yours truly - but I had wanted to run the partial tank out, lol, sheesh the things you think of

prime it, pull it (behave) and it cranked right up.

the funny thing .. I wasnt scared out in the bay, too concerned with not making any MORE mistakes that would kill me (and drown that beaut of a motor)

Approaching the cape may bridge, I saw it get hit with lighting ... and was deathly afraid to go under it, I read that lighting could "git ya" under a bridge

Eventually, I did not die

I might not have kissed the dock when I got back, but I was glad to get off that boat and into the shelter of the rubber insulated van -

and thus was born the perfect name for a little tin boat used fairly regularily out in Delaware Bay ...

Hydrophobia :)

* - old memory brain fart, it was a 7.5 horse McCulloch, and a 4.5 Gamefisher, together they made 12 horses ... the 7.5 planed her no sweat tho, powerful little motor
my pop gave it to me just this year but it's been in the family since 74. we've had the motor and the gearcase rebuilt, and she still runs like a champ. I just added the tower, i know it lookes out of place, but it's great to board behind. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks

Re: Lets see your first boat.

My first boat was 14; Winner bow rider with a Johnson 85. First trip out I burned the motor up, and rebuilt it to running order with help from this site. Thats how I discovered site, but that's the only good thing I say about the boat.. It was a rotten floored, rotten seat, rotten upholstry rotten boat. After second time out in the boat after rebuilding the engine I get back to the ramp and some drunk guy picked a fight with me, I thought he was kick my behind for sure. I them pulled the boat to a friends house who like it and gave it to him. Waited two years and bought the boat I wanted brand new.

Re: Lets see your first boat.

Catfish.

Thanx mate..

Won't bore everyone with details, but in a nutshell, she is a 14ft "Halfcab" made by Unicorn fibreglass boats Melbourne in the 80's to 90's.
It has 1990 ID Plate and has always been gararged hence the orignal condition.
These are rare boats.. specially red ones :D as they went out of production in the early 90's .. too much competition from Savage and Haines.

BTW Keep up the good work Ray.. ;)
