Broken fleming - Lewmar pro-sport 550

Hi
I have a Lewmar Pro-Sport 550 that has a plastic flemming that got chewed up by 12mm 3 ply rope. Parts not available down under (in Aussie) and have had to ship from the UK which hasn't been cheap. Windlass is only 10 months old and supplier isn't too interested in helping out. I'm keen to know where I can source a stainless steel version fleming for a RC0670 gypsy, can't seem to find one down here or through Lewmar in the UK. They may not even exist. Have switched to 8 plait nylon rope and once the new fleming arrives I will see how that goes but feeling is, it'll snap again under minor load. Anyone got any ideas to ensure it does not happen again? Any operating tips would be appreciated
Cheers
Tony

Howdy Tony
From the specs on the windless specs I find it can take 6 to 7mm (1/4) chain and 3-lay or 8-plait 12mm (1/2) nylon rode. The windless is designed for up to 28 foot boat. Did you splice the line to the chain or was is bought that way? Also does the splice go through the windless without issue, or did the splice cause the breakage?

I think I know what your talking about but what is a flemming"?

Rope and chain all as supplied, properly spliced etc. the fleming is also known as a splitter, separates the rope away from the gypsy under retrieval. In the photo (attached above) you can see how the fleming/splitter has snapped then doubled back under the gypsy, grabbed by rope, thus causing a jam which when it occurred took me about an hour bobbing around in the Indian Ocean to clear. I think it's simply too flimsy a part that, when the rope is under any strain and drops further into the gypsy, just wears hard on that part of the fleming/stripper causing it to break. That's my guess anyway. If I can get a metal one that'll fix the problem, I hope Just looking for advice from others who may have had the same experience. I've since learnt that lewmar haven't sold many of these 550 units in Australia hence their agent doesn't carry spares and they have to come from the UK. Costs a fortune

It does appear to be a fairly flimsy part. Don't think a metal one would work because it keeps it self pressed to the inner part of the gypsy to strip the rode. A metal one would not flex, maybe a redesign using a spring pressing a piece of metal formed correctly to work.

Not that this will help but maybe get it fixed and sell it. Replace with a Maxwell model. Have one on my 94 cruiser and never had any issue. I'm using all chain, but there are several others at my location which use chain/line and have not heard much anything dealing with problems
