My old 1979 Merc V6 150hp has 698 hrs without a rebuild.
Is that a huge amount for these motors and what sort of life would you expect from one.
Thanks John

Re: Life expectancy of motor

thats not aneasy question to answer - close ? yes but how close depends on how you use it - even low useage adds age to it -but best way to start knowing is to check the valve train for looseness that will indicate cam wear .
1000 hours is acheivable - but are you burning oil yet ?

With good maintenance that engine is good for thousands of hours. Any event of abuse or neglect probably shortens that.

It is probably a bit of an exaggeration to say that outboards never wear out if they are well maintained, but I never saw one wear out.

I don't think a 79 v6 outboard has a camshaft.

Run efficiently, and always with good fuel and well oiled, they run thousands of hours. On the other hand, you can break one before you get around the breakwater with a little bit of stupidity.

They can last forever. Depends on the owners.
