lifting mercury 150?

Hi,<br />I'm repainting a boat with a 1987 Mercury 150 V6 Black Max. I want to pull the motor, and I guess the best way would be to use a lifting ring. But when I priced them, it seemed they're pretty expensive, and I can't remember where I found one. Is there another cheaper way for one person to safely get a large outboard off a transom (and back on!)? If not, where would I buy a lifting ring?<br />Thanks,<br />Lewis

Lewis you either need to rent a gantry or find a friend that is handy with rigging as it is necessary to remove motor without damaging transom.Lifting ring is least of worries if you don't have some overhead means of rigging to.

If you can find a friendly meck. Rent one, call around offer to leave the complete price for a new one, and then when returning leave the rented price. Worked for me, and extra money for a hard working soul…John

Hi guys,<br />Thanks for the replies. The overhead rigging won't be a problem, it's getting a solid connection to the motor to lift with that I'm concerned about.<br />Lewis

Motor should have lifting eye attached to top of block. If not there should be a threaded hole to accomodate one.

I have a bad habit of loaning my tools to friends so have had to imrovize a couple times... A nylon strap.. "1" tie-down" works very well... Make a loop.. Slide the strap under the 2 little ears at the bottom of the exahust plate..."coils are bolted to this plate" then go up over the flywheel and hook around the bottom carb.. Motor wieghs about 360 lbs so keep that in mind when lifting.... Be ceeeeeeerfull..
