My dad is 65 years old and is considering a late model or new outboard for trolling and kicker motor for his 17 foor tri hull. He currently uses a 1965 9 1/2 horsepower johnson on an adjustable bracket. Last year I let him use my 2003 8 horsepower short shaft to see if he liked it. He loved the motor,it used about a third of the gas his 9 1/2 uses. Only one problem the mercs are too heavy for him to handle. My merc weighs 73 pounds.
Dad is leaning towards a 6 HP johnson they are lighter, about 58 pounds.

Any recommendations for a 2 cylinder lightweight motor.

Thanks,I think The Johnny and the Yamaha are the lightest weight in the 2 cylinder motors.

why not get a Yamaha or honda four-stroke and a adjustable mount and pulley system so he can raise and lower it?

NO, no outboard has this, you can go to any sailing web site and order a 1:2 1:3 1:4 boomvang system with line for under $100.00

You will need an adjustable mount like this:
and if you still have trouble raising the outboard, install a pulley system.
click er

Sounds like Dad needs to be able to carry, mount and dismount the engine.

Go for a JohnnyRude 3 or 4 hp twin. Under 50lb and plenty to troll or "kick" a 17' boat. Also smoothest small engine and easy to pull start.

The 2 cycle Johnson 6 & 8 hp are the same weight.
