I have a 1988 125 HP Force outboard. After using the motor lime deposits on the the snout of the exhaust housing. Is this a normal thing? I haven't noticed any overheating of the engine and there is water being sputtered out. Impeller was replaced early this year. Thanks for the help !

If it's not heating up??
Test the overheat buzzer.

IF?? there are deposits on the snout, then you can bet the thermo's gonna gunk up too.
Take it out and see what it looks like.

These pics were from a running motor.
Running hot but running.

This motor was NEVER flushed after running in salt water.

Engine was never used in salt water. Lime deposits are on the exterior of the lower unit. Anyway, I've ordered a thermo and intend to test the old thermo. Assuming the worst ( that the thermo is surrounded by lime deposits and therefore the cooling jacket as well) How do you suggest I remove the deposits ?? CLR ? Thank you for your response !!

If the motor isn't overheating, then you should be OK. A small amount of lime deposits is normal. If you have enough deposits to impede the flow of cooling water, the only way to get rid of it is to take the head, exhaust cover and thermostat out like Jerry shows in the pictures. The bolts that hold the exhaust cover on are prone to breaking. If you do not have the tools/patience to drill the bolt out, then you may have a problem.
