I have replaced them and used heat shrink on the splices but who knows how long it will last. A couple of years maybe.

Some of the really good mechanics found a way using flexible socket extensions and/or swivel sockets and/or offset open end wrench to replace them without "doing it by the book"; the mobile mechanic I used back in 2010 was able to do it without removing the bellhousing.....but he had done it many times that way.

If you have one bolt, it can be done without removing the bellhousing. I had 2 bolts and there was nothing I could do to get to that top bolt. I had to remove the bellhousing and turn it and use an offset 11mm wrench to get to that top bolt. I only put the bottom bolt back on as that is all that's needed to hold it.

I also found a video where someone drilled holes in the transom, one for each wire. That's probably the easiest way, but my conscience wouldn't let me drill two more holes in my transom (wood). If you do it by the book, it's really not that bad (assuming you have the right tools).
