How do you perform a link and sync on a 1988 25Hp Evinrude? I know where the adjuster screw is on the rod and how to move it, but how do you know when it is set properly?
Thanks...
P.S Just wanted to let everyone know that this site is amazing, I'm an auto mechanic, but the 2 stroke outboard stuff is really new to me. I've had a boat for 2 years now and this site has answer many question for me. Thanks :)

Re: Link and Sync

Do the following:

1: Make sure the trottle butterfly do not start to open before the timer base has moved to the position where the throttle roller is placed between the two marks on cam. Can be adjusted by loosening screw on trottle connector arm below roller linckage. Motor will cough or sneeze if trottle opens too early.

2: Adjust full trottle spark advance by turning the screw with rubber end in or out to specified spark advance ( check your manual )

Can be done by measuring 4 deg less spark advance in full trottle position, but only at crancking speed. Take both plugs out and ground them in meanwhile.

3: Adjust the full trottle linckage so trottle butterfly opens to horisontal position at full trottle .

Good luck.

Re: Link and Sync

Hi Springbok.

While GDane's explanation is good, there is no substitute for a Repair Manual. Link'n'Synch is a most important tune up procedure to getting best performance and life from your engine.

Do yourself a favor. Get one.

You can get OEM manuals from www.kencook.com or you can get aftermarket manuals right here: http://www.boatmotors.com/manuals.html

Good luck. :)
