Forgive me if I misunderstand the premise of the PISTON STOP TOOL, but couldn't I get away with a long thin bolt with a nut and a wide washer.

Also all throttle linkage and carb adjustments can be determined while running in my driveway, correct ?

I do see that idle speed adjustment has to be done under running conditions.

What make and model number??

No. On many engines some adjustments require that the engine is in water and under load.

Hey JB, WHALERS Hoooooo (Katama)

1987 Ev 90HP

How about the tool idea ???

Is all this pretty much necessary after rebuilding carbs and changing to different control cables ???

I don't think you will need a piston stop tool unless you or someone else has messed with the flywheel or pointer. If you want to check the pointer I don't see why your design wouldn't work. You can do most of the link/synch in your driveway, then check and tweak in the water.

Re: Link and synch questions.

I figure if :

1) I got to go thru all that LINK

&

2) I can make a rudimentary tool for nothing

I might as well make sure the job is done right. It is an '87 and I'm at the very least the 3rd owner.

Sounds like good logic......... as long as you don't mess something else up fixing something that ain't broke  bin there dun that. If I was too make that tool I would probably round of the threaded end of the bolt somewhat with a grinder.

Re: Link and synch questions.

Appreciate where you're coming from and if it seems too hairy I'll back out. My manual is a little confusing on this one but I didn't have the motor in front of me when studying it.

I figure my current marks should be pretty close and I won't do anything if they are not.

Right now she runs but has a few issues that I hope all this will clear up (misses here and there before warmed up, after running for a few minutes cuts off and sounds like it isn't even close to starting).

Again link and synch is normal after a carb rebuild and/or a complete change of control box and cables ????

Re: Link and synch questions.

A simple piston stop tool is a long reach spark plug... I used an NGK BR9ES from my snowmobile. Just thread it in all the way and it will contact the piston before it reaches TDC.
