Hi All,
I just purchased a 1979 70hp Evinrude, did the carbs up, runs fine, but doesn't open wide open, and has a slight bobble when cracking it wide open. I believe it needs a link and sync. I'm very mechanically inclined, but haven't done alot with outboards yet. Can someone tell me how to adjust the linkages, just the marks and stuff, and what moves when, I'm sure I can figure out the rest.. Thanks.

Howdy, James.

Welcome to iboats. :)

You really should do that with a manual, particularly if you plan on maintaining the engine yourself. It will pay for itself many times over.

Trying to work on an outboard without a manual causes more grief than most other causes combined.

One of our members, Steelspike, says that if you work on an outboard without a manual you have a fool for a mechanic. Pretty strong, but very true.

Good luck. :)

James, take JB's advise I have been around boats all my life, have almost 30 years as a mechanic also have a charter boat and a small boat with an outboard and I can change the plugs and water pump without the manual thats about it, I do my own repairs but have to refer to the book quite a bit, the guy's here are a great help also. spring for the oem service manual for your engine, good luck and all questions are welcome..
